Social Media Release IS Getting Standards

I saw on the PR Squared blog that it looks like the industry is taking a step towards the issue I raised in my post Social Media Release: Got Standards?

Todd Defren, one of the originators of the SMR concept, posted about IABC's (International Association of Business Communicators') plans to take on the work needed to further develop and promote the adoption of the social media release format.

He also shared on the same blog what this means about his concurrent efforts for updating the original format.

I know the SMR idea has served as a proxy for the broader discussion about how PR should adapt to changing times.  I don't want to beat to death this debate, or spend a lot more time rehashing related topics that have already been discussed at length on this blog, and many others.

At the same time I implore Defren, IABC - anyone who will listen - to make the SMR light, standards-based, designed with measurement in mind, and finally that we - in our efforts to cut "spin" out - do not reduce press releases to dull, "just the facts" shells.
